shuquío

(pronounced shew-KEY-oh)

A bad smell. “¡Guácala! Esos frijoles ya tienen shuquío.” Translation: “Gross!

Those beans smell terrible!”

Salió más caro el caldo

que los frijoles.

Literal meaning: The broth was

more expensive than the beans.

In a nutshell: Ever heard of a Pyrrhic victory? It is a triumph that costs so many lives and resources that, in the end, it’s not worth the steep price. When some officials began throwing around the idea of trying to incriminate those who participated in the guerrilla warfare of the 1980s, one opinion columnist responded: “Conocer la verdad no tiene nada de malo. Pero, por donde nos están llevando, ‘el caldo nos saldrá más caro que los frijoles.’”

Translation: “There’s nothing wrong with knowing the truth. But with the direction they are leading us, we are headed for a hollow victory.”
